UV and Heat
Florida sun is harder on asphalt shingles than most manufacturers' national warranty language accounts for. Constant UV exposure dries out the asphalt in the shingle mat, which is what makes it flexible and self-sealing. Wind Rating, Nailing, and Florida Building Code
Shingles carry a wind rating based on lab testing, but that rating only applies if the shingle is installed exactly the way it was tested — correct nail count, correct nail placement, correct exposure, correct starter and ridge detailing. A wind-rated shingle installed with four nails instead of six, or nails driven high into the tab instead of the reinforced nailing strip, does not perform to its rating no matter what the wrapper says.
Pinellas County enforces the Florida Building Code, which sets specific requirements for wind resistance, underlayment, and fastening in coastal wind zones. A licensed local roofer pulls the permit, follows the code requirements for the zone your home sits in, and has the roof inspected against those requirements — not against a generic national standard.
